Quick LJ PSA:

If you've had your birthday displayed, either for age verification or any other reason, LJ has now changed the default on the profile page to "do not display", so if you've updated your profile within the past few weeks (or possibly even if you haven't, I'm not sure), you're going to have to go in and click to display it again.

*sighs*

Oh, LJ. You are just beyond stupid lately.

Wow. I am suddenly very glad that I only paid for 6 months when I last renewed my account. I mean, polls and extra user pictures are handy enough, but seriously... I don't want to be paying more for Live Journal stupidity

I updated mine when they put in the "display month and day only" feature, and it's still set that way.

These changes seem to be, among other things, inconsistent.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have been pretty tired of all the recent changes to lj, but I feel that this one is in the right direction, let me explain...

A big problem with how lj has been doing things lately is that they seem to think that the majority of their users are much younger than they really are because, quite frankly, A LOT of the older users simply did not want to share their actual age. So, the average age was brought down considerably, and hence, the targeting of lj to the younger crowd commenced (myspace, anyone?). They have now been told how wrong they were to assume that from the information they had and I believe this is part of the solution.

But they still don't know how to share this information with people that all of a sudden notice that things are different and it's a pain.

Oh, yes, definitely - but the fact that the default is now "do not display" and if you had it previously displayed (and I did, year and all) and then updated your profile, it no longer displayed.

While I agree that it is a step in the right direction - yay, now you can choose to only show year! - it's still rather stupid that they didn't keep previous selections.

Yes, LJ can't seem to get things right when it comes to thinking like a user. *sigh*

Thanks for the headsup. Just changed mine and posted a notice in my LJ.

So, good news is they've added new options to display just the date withouit the year or vice versa.

I suppose this is a reaction to all the people who started posting their birthyears to bump up the average LJ-age. ANd I did hear from some people who were trying to decide the lesser-of-2-evils: posting their age OR letting LJ have misleading stats.

But couldn't they have done this without resetting everyone's settings?
